Hotel Metropolitan
Hotel Metropolitan is a science fiction crime/noir drama set in New York City. Though the work is some of my better stuff, I ultimately decided to put the project on hold in favor of 6-Commando, which I was more able to update on a regular schedule. I like this project in particular because it had a well-developed architectural environment that felt very real to me. However, all that detail took me a long time to do, and as I work long hours professionally as it is, I needed to take a more systematic approach to my comics than this particular project would allow at what was, then, my current level of productivity.
As 6-Commando ramps up, however, my technique has become more production-oriented, and I am beginning to think about restarting Hotel Metropolitan. It still occupies a corner of my studio, waiting for the day when it will resurface.
Here’s a sampling of some completed pages. The last image was the first “color” test – since this was to be a “film noir,” I opted for a strong greyscale to give the appearance of a black-and-white movie. I think it was rather effective, particularly in combination with the colored linework, which added to the depth of scene. The techniques are ones I’ve applied to give 6-Commando its cel-shaded “animation” look.
